The VMA Science Department is thrilled to announce the culminating event of our annual Science Fair, themed “Science for Human Flourishing.”

This year’s theme shines a light on the important role science plays in improving our quality of life. It highlights how advances in health, medicine, and mental wellness can help build healthier, more resilient communities.

Through this theme, students are challenged to think critically and creatively as they design solutions to real-world problems affecting human well-being.

Here’s what’s in store for this year’s Science Fair:            Check the Science Fair Schedule

Science Research Exhibits and Congress

This event showcases the experimental projects of students from the regular science courses. Throughout the semester, they explored experimental research and engineering design. Projects range from basic science concept verification to chemical structure analysis and food studies.

The top five teams from each category—Biology, Chemistry, and Physics—will present their work before a panel of expert judges.

In collaboration with Math and CS-STEAM Departments Date: 16-23 May 2025   Time: PP1/PP2  Venue: VMA 4F Science corridors and exhibition areas

Visual Arts, STEAM, and Mathematics Exhibits

Students’ outstanding and creative works that connect science with art, technology, engineering, and math will also be on display. These exhibits highlight how science ideas can be expressed across different fields.

In collaboration with VMA Visual Arts Department Date: 16-23 May 2025   Time: PP1  Venue: VMA 4F Science, Math and Steam corridor areas View the online gallery (available after May 15, 2025)

Argumentative Speaking Competition

In this event, students will debate the question: “Is the development of artificial intelligence in healthcare more helpful or harmful?” While exploring both sides of the issue, they will also sharpen their public speaking and critical thinking skills.

In collaboration with VMA Public Speaking Club Date: 21 May 2025   Time: PP1  Venue: VMA 2F Lobby (Also 3-day training slated for Final Round contestants)

Poster-Making and Essay-Writing Competitions

In these on-the-spot contests, students will express their ideas on issues related to the theme through writing and art. These activities challenge their critical and creative thinking under time pressure.

In collaboration with VMA World Languages Department and Writing Center  Essay Writing Competition: Date: 29 April 2025   Time: PP1  Venue: VMA 437

Poster-Making Competition: Date: 30 April 2025   Time: PP1  Venue: VMA 437

Problem-Based Learning (PBL) Competition

Solving problems scientifically! In this challenge, students are given a real-world problem to investigate. They will design an experiment, collect and analyze data, and present evidence-based solutions.

Date: 14 May 2025   Time: PP1/PP2  Venue: VMA 422

Science Lectures by Guest Scientists

Experts in chemistry, biology, and physics will be joining us to share their groundbreaking research with students. These lectures are designed to spark curiosity and inspire students to explore science-related fields.

One featured talk is titled “Sleepless and Stressed: The Silent Impact of Sleep Loss,” shedding light on the science behind sleep and its effects on well-being.

In collaboration with partner universities and companies Date: 21 May 2025   Time: PP1  Venue: VMA Classrooms Click here to view the lecture topics

 "Dress Like a Scientist"

This fun show-and-tell activity highlights the diverse careers in science and the passion behind them. During a Friday science lesson, students will explain how various scientists contribute to improving human wellness. Teachers are also invited to join in the fun!

Date: 16 May 2025   Time: Science class times  Venue: VMA Science classrooms

Science Treasure Hunt

In this exciting search-and-answer challenge, students will use basic science concepts as clues to find “treasure items” hidden around the VMA campus. It’s a fun way to reinforce learning while exploring the campus!

In collaboration with VMA UK Science Department Date: 19 May 2025   Time: PP1/PP2  Venue: VMA 4F Science, Math and Steam areas

AP Students-led Lectures and Workshops

Top AP students will present their favorite advanced high school-level topics to aspiring AP students. These student-led lectures aim to encourage and inspire others to pursue AP courses and experience the inquiry-based nature of learning.

Date: 19 May 2025   Time: PP1/PP2  Venue: VMA Science Classrooms

Science and Math Quest (Quiz)

This strategy game-inspired quiz challenges students to apply science and math concepts through interactive problem-solving. Blending real-world applications, logical reasoning, and historical context, the game tests not just knowledge but critical thinking and strategic decision-making. Perfect for engaging learners in a fun, competitive environment that deepens their understanding of scientific principles.
